Connaught Place, New Delhi, April-December, 2011
It was started as a joint initiative by Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE) and the Plastic Manufactures and Traders Association, Delhi (PMTA) to demonstrate a litter-free experience for all. Connaught Place (C.P) attracts a lot of visitors and since the introduction of the Metro, it has seen a revival of the shopping complex and many more visitors. The visitors discarded a large amount of solid waste such as plastic bags, cups, wrappers etc. across the area due to the unavailability of proper disposal facilities. A dedicated team of 8 workers and a supervisor worked throughout the week except Tuesday from morning 11 AM till evening 7 PM to ensure that the area was kept clean and spread awareness about Anti-Littering practices. They were provided with proper uniforms, safety guards and cleaning equipments. Black colored bags were used for collection of waste that was ultimately discarded in the large community bins put-up by NDMC.
Approximately more than 100 tons of solid waste was picked and disposed properly in six months of our operations at Connaught Place. The initiative was supported and appreciated by the local market association i.e. New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) and got covered by the local media as well.
